I am a Registered Associate Nutritionist (ANutr) with the Association of Nutrition, a nationally recognised qualification that meets strict science-based competencies and ensures that I work according to a code of ethics that promotes evidence-based nutritional advice.
My scientific background working within cancer research for over two decades, has provided me with valuable experience while working closely with NHS colleagues to try to improve the outcome of cancer patients. Over time I have become increasingly interested in the important links that exist between lifestyle factors such as diet on many diseases such as cancer, cardio-vascular disease, and Type II diabetes. Unlike risk factors such as genetics, diet is modifiable which means that changes can be made that can strongly reduce the risk of contracting these diseases as well as benefiting from significant improvements in quality of life.
There is a lot of conflicting, confusing and sometimes inaccurate nutritional information available within the public sphere which can create an overall sense of confusion and distrust. My background in scientific research has provided me with the tools that allow me to critically evaluate scientific information and interpret using clear and concise language; this is important as an equitable food environment requires access to trusted, comprehensive advice for all.
I strongly believe in the concept of ‘Food as Medicine’ and the enormous positive impact diet can have on quality of life. Supporting individuals to make meaningful changes to their diet as well as improving their relationship with food, can help make eating a more enjoyable activity and reduce feelings of shame and restriction which can easily manifest themselves into disordered eating.
I have a particular interest in improving the quality and accessibility of children’s diets. Early intervention can make a significant difference to many aspects of children’s health and prevent a decline later in life -numerous studies have shown that dietary habits formed in early years are highly likely to continue into adulthood.
I believe in the joy of preparing and eating a healthy diet and the vital role it plays in not only maintaining good health, but also in creating social connections and moments of pleasure throughout our daily lives. Everyone should be able to experience this, and I am happy to help you begin this journey.
