Book Review: Cooking For Your Kids by Joshua David Stein

I randomly picked this book up in a charity shop, I thought the concept sounded interesting; professional chefs from around the world share recipes they cook at home for their kids. Most recipe books aren’t aimed at feeding children, which is quite odd as such a large proportion of the population has to do this on a regular basis and most find it difficult to create appetising and nutritious meals for notoriously picky youngsters.

This is a very handsome book, recipes are accompanied by a short introduction from the chef, describing the origin of the recipe, who they cook it for, and under what circumstances. It’s a great insight into what off-duty chefs cook and gives readers an opportunity to get inspired by a variety of food cultures and practices. I particularly liked the range and uniqueness of the breakfast options, no sugary, ultra processed cereals here!

The book is sectioned very simply into breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner and treats and helpfully sub-sectioned into vegan, vegetarian, dairy free, gluten free, 30 minutes or less and 5 ingredients or less.

Recipes are original; I found lots of new ideas and found it encouraging that the recipes shared are generally favoured by kids. Instructions are detailed and vary from extremely simple to extremely complicated! the meals are generally ones that can be shared with all the family.

On the whole the recipes include a variety of ingredients that are plant rich. They include some inventive ways of making notoriously difficult food groups appealing to all.

I would recommend this book as both a pleasure to read and a useful tool in your cookery inspiration kit for both kids and adults alike.
